Dr. Shalini Shenoy, director of the bone marrow transplant program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, is leading successful research into curing sickle cell anemia with bone marrow transplantation. Reduced intensity pre-transplant conditioning has made it possible to transplant patients from unmatched bone marrow donors, widening the net of potential donors and giving more young patients a chance to receive a bone marrow transplant, and a cure for their sickle cell.

The research at the Institute of Cellular Therapeutics at UofL’s School of Medicine is being used in clinical trials on several types of medical conditions, and it’s showing great promise for curing auto-immune diseases like multiple sclerosis.
