How would you know if you had an iron deficiency?

July 14th, 2010 by admin

I’m 29 weeks pregnant and lately(past few weeks) I’ve been extremely fatigued and sleeping constantly. I sleep all through the night (at least 8-9 hours) and then I’ll sleep between 4-5 hours during the day as well. I know that being really tired is normal in pregnancy so I was wondering if there were any other signs of an iron deficiency? Also, does the doctor regularly check for this or just once throughout the pregnancy? Because I don’t think I have been checked at all for it, at least I haven’t been told. How do they detect it?

your doctor would tell you if you did have a deficiency. They should be taking your blood for test again soon and that’s one thing they test for…I was anemic during my pregnancy and had to take supplements. i didn’t have any ’signs’. i just got a phone call a few days after my blood was drawn.
But if you do think something might be off call your doctor and they can get your blood work done to check.

Why do some people with an iron deficiency eat strange items like dirt etc?

July 11th, 2010 by admin

I’ve recently become vegetarian and i’ve been researching iron deficiencies and read that some people who have one start to eat things like dirt and ice all the time. Why is that?

Only people with PICA eat dirt. It is a form of mental retardation where they have to test everything in their mouth to see if it tastes good or not. It has nothing to do with iron deficiency.

can having an iron deficiency/anaemia cause me to be able to sleep for long periods of time?

July 8th, 2010 by admin

i can sometimes sleep for a solid 16 hours even if i’m not that tired the previous night. if i sleep in, i don’t wake up until 12 hours after i initially went to sleep. can having an iron deficiency cause me to do this? if not, what does?

Yes my gf has slight anemia, it has gotten better but she gets tired a lot and goes to sleep early and even when she sleeps 8 or 9 hours she is still wakes up tired. Its frustrating but you have to practice better dieting and exercise, drink more water, eat some bananas, no smoking, and try taking some iron supplements.

Does eating ice mean I have an iron deficiency?

July 5th, 2010 by admin

I didn’t start eating ice until my third trimester of pregnancy and I keep eating it until this day. Does that mean for sure I have an iron deficiency or I just like ice?
I know there is no iron in ice..I never said there was people.

Possibly. Doctors use the term "pica" to describe craving and chewing substances that have no nutritional value — such as ice, clay, cornstarch and paper. Craving and chewing ice (pagophagia) is often associated with iron deficiency anemia — although it may be associated with other nutritional problems as well. In some individuals, pica is a symptom of emotional problems, such as stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder or a developmental disorder.

A thorough medical evaluation can help determine if pica is due to an underlying medical condition. If the cause of pica is an emotional or developmental issue, cognitive behavior therapy may be helpful.

Is eating lemons unhealthy for someone with Iron Deficiency Anemia?

July 2nd, 2010 by admin

I’m pretty skinny for my age and I have iron deficiency anemia. I love eating lemons but whenever i do my mom yells at me saying that it sucks the iron out of my blood and makes me skinny?
Is this true? Is eating too many lemons unhealthy?

According to this resource, it is the opposite, beneficial, assisting "absorption of Vitamin C".
