Authors of the study gave diaries to 232 sickle cell disease patients to record daily pain and indicate whether they used hospital emergency or unscheduled ambulatory care for their pain. Previous estimates about sickle cell pain assumed that if patients didn’t go to the hospital or seek medical care for pain, they didn’t have pain. Previous sickle cell treatments also were based on the number of visits to hospitals to relieve pain.

The naval doctors recently found out he has hemolytic anemia. He has apparently had it all his life. It leaves him feeling very fatigued and at times very ill.He has tried iron pills,changing his diet nothing seems to help. The naval doctors haven’t said much yet. He would like to get medically discharged from the Navy due to this condition. Is it possible? And how does he go about presenting his case?

1) The doctors will prepare a medical board report. If he has over 3 years service, there is a presumption of service aggravation. That report will be sent to the Physical Evaluation Board for a determination of disability rating. If the rating is 30% or less, and your husband accepts it, he will be discharged with severance pay. If the percentage is 30% or higher he will be transferred to the Disability Retired List, with all base privileges for his dependents and himself (including medical benefits).
2) If he has less than three years of service, the medical board will recommend his discharge for a disqualifying medical condition which existed prior to his entry.

And why does kidney disease/failure often cause nausea and loss of appetite? Thank you!

Iron alone would not help as kidney failure results in too low levels of erythropoietin, a hormone the kidneys makes that induces the bone marrow to make RBCs.

Iron often is given, but the levels have to be monitored, as iron overload can lead to serious toxicity, including liver toxcity.

In all cases of anemia, iron levels have to be measured to justify iron supplementation.

With my current condition and taking these pills twice a day (with vitamin C pills), how long do you think it will take for my iron count to go up and my anemia symptoms to begin disappearing?

usually your blood test will be repeated in 2 to 6 months. you should start to see an improvement slowly over the next weeks and months.
