How do you stop from becoming anemic?
Hi.
I’ve been vegetarian for a couple months now and one of my friends told me that I was going to become anemic from not eating meat.
I’ve been trying to check out how much iron things have to try and up my iron intake, but what are some things (that are vegetarian obviously…) that I can eat for a good source of iron?
Here’s how it works. Iron can be found everywhere, you can even find more in vegetables like spinach and beans than in meat. But there’s a problem, the iron you find in vegetables is the non emetic one and you need also emetic iron which can be found only in meat. I’m anemic but I eat meat and I also take iron supplements. Anyway you are not anemic yet, are you? So make some blood exams, if you are, ask what to do to a doctor, he may tell you to take supplements, but since you are vegetarian the only thing you can do to prevent anemia is to eat vegetables which contain iron even if they won’t really help you. I found some websites where there are listed all the foods rich in iron, they also talk of meat but don’t pay attention to that:

Good luck, bye bye!

You can take daily Iron supplements. They sell them at most drugstores.
My mom was anemic and took these everyday, now her Iron levels are fine.

Eat nuts, baked beans and dried apricots. They are good for iron
There are different types of aneamia: megoloblastic (lack of B12, etc etc )

Yes, dark green veggies have a good amount of iron in them and as long as you continue to eat these and take a multi-vitamin with iron (not too much!), you shouldn’t become anemic.

it’s a common misconception you’ll go veg and suddenly be anemic or not get protein or get sick or whatever… not true as long as you pay attention to your diet and eat a variety of foods. i think spinach is the biggest source of iron that i know…. make sure your eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, grains, and protein source (hummus, pb, nuts, lentils, beans, soy, soy milk, cheese, imitation meats/veggie burgers, etc.) and you should be fine.

I think that’s a myth.
Most vegans don’t have a problem with anemia.
Also there are different kinds of anemia, so it might not necessarily be caused by not eating meat.
Just eat a good variety of vegetarian foods you’ll be fine.
You could probably take supplements too.
